The Maldives' capital and most populated city is Malé. Malé is one of the world's most densely inhabited cities, with 211,908 people living inside its administrative territory and conterminous geographical area of 8.30 square kilometers (3.20 sq mi) as of 2022.Geographically, the city is situated on North Malé Atoll's southern border. It was formerly known as the King's Island, the location of the palace and the seat of the old royal dynasty. At that time, the city was known as Mahal.The center of all commercial activity in the nation is a commercial harbor situated on the central island. On the island of Hulhulé sits Velana International Airport.There are both wet and dry seasons in the city.A vast system of paved roadways, known as magu (road or street), hingun, and goalhi (little road or lane), connects each of Malé's islands. There is a lot of traffic on the roads, particularly on Malé Island.

All international tourists receive a free 30-day visa upon arrival in the Maldives, provided they have a valid passport (with at least 1 month validity), a confirmed return ticket, confirmed accommodation booking (hotel/resort), and sufficient funds ($100 + $50 per day). A Traveller Declaration form must be submitted electronically via IMUGA within 96 hours of arrival.
