Kerala is a state in India's Malabar Coast. After the States Reorganization Act was passed, it was created on November 1, 1956, by merging the Malayalam-speaking areas of the former Cochin, Malabar, South Canara, and Travancore territories. Kerala, the 14th smallest Indian state by land, is 38,863 km2 (15,005 sq mi). It shares borders with Tamil Nadu to the east and south, Karnataka to the north and northeast, and the Lakshadweep Sea to the west. Kerala has 33 million residents, making it the 13th most populous state in India according to the 2011 census. Thiruvananthapuram serves as the capital, and it is separated into fourteen districts. The state's official language and the most commonly spoken language is Malayalam.Keralan culture is an essential component of Indian culture and is multifaceted and multicultural.Under the support of royal houses, the five classical dance forms—Kathakali, Mohiniyattam, Koodiyattom, Thullal, and Krishnanattam—began and evolved in temple theaters throughout the classical era.Other dance styles connected to the region's temple culture include Kerala natanam, Thirayattam, Kaliyattam, Theyyam, Koothu, and Padayani.
